It lies on the Mount Gün, 2 km far from the Köseler Village, which is 8-10 km from the Yeni Şakran Village on the Izmir-Çanakkale motorway, 35 km away from the Bergama District of Izmir. The mound is approximately 12 km inland from the seashore, and 350 m high above the sea level [Sevin 2001a:251]. First excavations were launched by E. Doger in 2004 and were carried out until 2016. In 2017, Manisa Museum excavated the site for a season. Since 2018, excavations at Aigai have been led by Y. Sezgin. The location of Aigai protected the city from the sieges and ravages. The eastern slope of the hill on which the acropolis is located overlooks a deep valley and the Güzelhisar Brook flowing down in the valley. A survey was conducted here by C. Schuchhardt, a member of the German team excavating Pergamon in 1885-86, and it was published in a book called "Altertumer von Aigai" in 1889. Later on, a systematic excavation was initiated by a team of the Classical Archaeology Department of Ege University under the direction of E. Doger in 2004. The fortifications and some of the bastions were either rebuilt or restored during the Roman Period as they sustained a grave damage from the earthquake in 17 AD. However, a considerable amount of the fortifications which seem to have been erected with polygonal stones are from the 6th century BC. |
