It lies about 1 km north of the Alaköy Village of the Central District, 28 km northwest of Van. It is a moderate size reservoir. It is supplied by the Çömlek and Baltalik Streams, which are formed as a result of combination of very strong spring waters originating from the hills to the north, being conveyed via a manmade channel. The reservoir wall has an eliptical shape, retaining the southern section. The wall was erected using large andesite stones, of which the exterior surfaces were rougly dressed, derived from the rich andesite deposits in the neighbourhood. A soil layer conveyed by the stream waters silted up the resevoir. It was rebuilt in 1976 by the Regional Directorate of Soil and Water Resources in Van, and unfortunately lost its original form during these activities. The reservoir water was used for irrigation of the fields and vegetation and fruit gardens in a wide and fertile land. It has been still used for the same purpose with repairworks undertaken. It seems that the Alaköy Fortress and the reservoir were built during the 7th century BC. |
