It lies 40-45 m south of the Yukari Agindir Dam, 8 km north of the Erzurum-Erzincan motorway, 30 km east of Erzincan. It was built for irrigation purposes in the 7th century BC during the Urartu Period. Although it suffered from earthquakes and landslips to a great extent, the wall structure consisting of soil mortar can be easily traced. It is proposed that the dam was built to have met the agricultural requirements of the Karakaya Fortress, 2 km to the north, and the Altintepe Fortress, 10 m to the west, both from the Urartu Period. |
