Location: It is situated 9 km southwest of Tekirdag. It is currently called Barbaros.
Geography and Environment:
History: Settled by Samians around 600 BC, Bisanthe was occupied by the Odrysian Kingdom for a while during the 4th century BC. The Odrysian prince Seuthes describes it as one of the most beautiful coastal cities under his reign [Xenophon, Anabasis, VII, 2, 38; VII, 5, 8]. The settlement was also mentioned by Herodotus (VII, 137). It is assumed that the ancient name of the settlement during Byzantine period [Erdem 2010:82].
Research and Excavation: Due to its small size and low height the settlement was defined as flat settlement by M. Özdogan. Classic Period sherds were collected by Özdogan during the survey from Barbaros. It was briefly excavated by Tekirdag Archaeological Museum and Thrace University in 2006 before the construction of the modern harbor, for identifying and controlling the limits of the ancient settlement. Structure foundations were analyzed which were reported as city walls in excavation reports [Erdem 2010:82]. It was revisited in 2008 by Z.K. Erdem for a survey.
Stratigraphy:
Small Finds: The survey performed by Z.K. Erdem in 2008 yielded Classical, Hellenistic, Roman, Late Roman and Byzantine period small finds such as sherds and terra cotta oillamps, glass vessel fragments, glass brace fragments and mints [Erdem 2010:82].
