Çalapverdi is a big fortress founded on a high and steep massif, overlooking the fertile Arsizözü Valley. It commands the main road connecting the Central Anatolia over Kizilirmak (around the Çokgöz Bridge, built by Seljuks) to Erkilet-Kayseri during the Ancient Age and Middle Age. It represents the northern border of the expansion area for the Hittite hieroglyphic inscriptions. The deposit thickness of Çalapverdi is less than 6 m. The fortress had been inhabited during the Hellenistic and Roma Periods other than the Iron Age. No sherds dating to the 2nd Millennium was found. Presence of inscriptions suggest that Çalapverdi was subject to the Land of Tabal as a border settlement at least for a certain period of time or from time to time. Monochrome and painted sherds were collected from Çalapverdi and Eskikale by K. Bittel and T. Özgüç.
