It is situated approximately 15 km southeast of Van. It is on the hill that arises over Kirmizi Tepe pond. It is approximately 25-30 m south of Yukari Kirmizi Tepe Fortress. The two fortresses are separated by a shallow cliff. The lower fortress is on a hill that lies north-south and measures approximately 76x214 m. The south end of the fortress is in the shape of a pointed tip. The altitude of the fortress is 2180 m. The gate is believed to be in the northeast section, the remains of the ancient road on the ramp which is not too steep is currently in use. But due to some missing building blocks the gate can not be exactly identified. The only visible portion of the fortress are the east wall foundations. These wall were built using the andesite stones from the quarries in the environs. Along with Yukari Kirmizi Tepe fortress, this fortress occupies a very important strategical location. The fortress overlooks Yoncatepe Palace, Van Plain and fortress to the west. The east of the fortress is blocked by Erek Mountain. Having the control over rich water springs and the historical road towards the plateaus, it apparently used be a very important administration center for the economy. The location of the fortress and the way it was designed is highly similar to the location and design of King Menua period (810-786BC) Asagi and Yukari Anzaf fortresses [Belli 2010:80-82]. |
