It was built to collect the waters from Deliçay Brook in Ercis District of Van, which passes through Karamagara Channel between Pay Village and Kizilmagara Village and runs very strong towards southwest. Deliçay Brook which eroded the andesite rock covered land deeply and widely, was changed the course by blocking with stones, and some of the running water was transfered this way into the canal that was built inside the ground in the northwest direction. But it was observed that the stones that blocked the brook were not stable. The canal has an average width of 3.5-5 m and a depth of 1-1.5 m. Its course was changed towards the south slopes of the flat hills, then to west direction. The land which is called Pay Düzü between the canal, and Deliçay Brook is being irrigated by the waters that run through these openings into the canal. In addition, the canal is also being used for agriculture performed in the fields that lie to Keklikova (Soskun ) Village environs after passing over the north of Pay village. It is approvimately 8-9 km long and functioning and similar to other canals it also dates to 7th century BC [Belli 2010:88]. |
