It is located in the Ataköy Village of the Merkez District to the east of the Kars-Kagizman motorway, 13 km south of Kars. The region is called Magaracik (Small Cave) due rock shelters and caves. They were discovered during a survey conducted in Kars by K. Kökten in 1942. The soundings carried out in the cave, which was referred as "Cave E" by K. Kökten, yielded stone tools from the Chalcolithic Period. Additionally, a mound was identified in the Ataköy Village. A cave was found on the western skirt of the mound, with an entrance closed due to natural causes. Also found are wall remains, which are 50x40 m in size and 10 m in height, and sherds including specimens from the Early Bronze Age, Early Iron Age, Late Iron Age and Middle Age. The mound is revisited during the survey carried out in 2009 by Y. Topaloğlu and team and it is named as Harmantepe Mound since it is currently being used for harvesting by the villagers. A path is made of carved rocks going down the mound to the Borluk Creek. The mound is located at a dominating position for the valley and the pottery collected is dated in EBA [Topaloğlu et al. 2011:8]. |
