The mound lies east-southeast of Mugla; northeast of Fethiye; 30 km northwest of Elmali; near Çaltilar village (Probably at the plain south of the village). It was discovered during the Survey; which was made east of the ancient city of Balboura; at the upper drainage areas of Karaculka and Küçüklü Rivers; conducted by J.J. Coulton in 1988. Medium-sized mound is located on a watery area. the area yielded finds dating between Chalcolithic and Iron Age [Momigliano et al. 2010:43]. During the researches carried out in previous years it was found out that the Iron Age layers are those just below the surface. Iron Age ceramics still constitute the major part of the overall findings which are mostly from Middle Iron Age and Archaic Age. However some on these point to Protogeometric Age which suggests an inhabitancy of at least 10 centuries. Finely decorated, large ad local made vessels, as well as samples with common bi-chrome style over pinkish slip are unique to Middle Iron Age. Most of the Iron Age materials, especially those collected from the bottom of the hill are affected by heavy water erosion. When other findings are considered chert and flint stone tools are still found however the finding group does not contain any obsidian pieces in addition to those found last year. Considerable amount of burnt adobe, debris, pieces of ceramic from Iron Age that are turned into debris suggest that industrial activities including metallurgy and ceramics production take part in Çaltılar during the last period [Momigliano et al. 2011: 225-228].
