It is located 1 km east of Altköy in Refahiye District of Erzurum Province. It was discovered during the survey conducted by Özgül and his team in 2011. It has a strategically significant position. It is situated on the road connecting the east to west. Altköy Creek flows from the west of the fortress. It overlooks the region. Located to the south, Yaslamçal Mountain creates a natural defense mechanism. The north part of the fortress faces to a small valley. The fortress was formed into dressed bedrock and it was built for the purpose of controlling the channel and road. Also, walls were formed by dressing natural stones in the fortress. The north section of the fortress is steep and it measures 28 m in height and 10 m in width. The entrance gate is located on the west. This fortress was built to control Köroglu Strait. Potsherds demonstrate that this fortress belongs to EBA. It was also inhabited during IA and Middle Age [Özgül et al. 2013:281]. |
