Esek Hamza Höyügü lies at Güllühöyük Quarter of Türkoglu district, Kahramanmaras province. The mound located at 488 m altitude covers an area of approximately 16537 square meters [Dumankaya et. al. 2018: 381]. Esek Hamza Höyügü is dated to the Late Chalcolithic Period, the Early Bronze Age and the Late Bronze Age. There are a variety of pottery assembladges documented at Esek Hamza Höyük. The first group is the red-orange coated pottery with jagged decoration. Within this assembladge there also exists a group of non-burnished, mostly flat-rimmed pottery, including a subgroup of coated ones. Second group is called the plain simple/ metallic ware and they are dated to the Early Bronze Age and the beginnings of the Middle Bronze Age. They are cream-coated, reddish brown and their rims are externally thickened and out-rolled. Similar pottery has been found within the region at Boyali, Büyükyapalak Büyük, Büyükyapalak Küçük, Büyükyapalak Gök and Çinarli Höyük. Third group includes a vertical handle sherd decorated with red bands on light-brown coating. It is similar to the so-called "Decorated Coated Pottery". Additionally, a non-burnished potsherd with reddish brown coating was found at Esek Hamza Höyük which is distinct in terms of form. The potsherd has a jagged decorated 1cm band in relief and a 2cm hole in middle of it. The hole is significant as it determines the function of the pottery [Dumankaya et. al. 2018: 384]. |
