Location: It lies some 3 km west of the Selimpasa Village of the Silivri District; west of the Istanbul Province. It is one of the biggest mounds on the shore of Marmara Sea in the Thrace Region. Istanbul-Tekirdag motorway runs to the south of the mound. Between the motorway and the mound; is a secondary road to Selimpasa.
Geography and Environment: There is a small bay where the Kavakli and Kocadere Streams spill to; located west of Selimpasa Village. The mound stands on a natural elevation at the mouth of the stream; on the eastern bank of Kavakli Stream. The western foots of the hill are steep and the eastern and southern slopes are slightly inclined. The mound; threatened by the modern settlement to its west and west; has been taken under protection as a result of the announcement by the Istanbul Archaeological Museum as a registered site.
History:
Research and Excavation: It was discovered in 1965 by D.H. French; and revisited during the Thrace Survey conducted by M. Özdogan. S. Aydingün et al. performed a visit in scope of Istanbul Prehistorical Ages Survey in 2008 and 2009 [Aydıngün et al. 2010:277]. It takes place in the registered archaeological sites list prepared by Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Stratigraphy: The stratification is unknown as it was not excavated. However; the material collected by both D.H. French and M. Özdogan belongs to EBA; items dating to Hellenistic and Roman Periods.Chalcolithic, EBA I and II, Iron Age, Early Phrygian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods were collected [Aydıngün et al. 2010:277].
Small Finds: Pottery: The pottery collected is burnished in dark colors; and comparable to the first phase of EBA in the Northwestern Anatolia. During the survey performed by S. Aydingün et al. in 2007 both the EBA sherds and the grey Manyas sherds were found [Aydingün 2009:414]. Chipped Stone: A stone hammer axe dating to Chalcolithic-EBA (?) was found during the survey performed by S. Aydingün in 2008 [Aydıngün et al. 2010:277]. Metal: A bronze item (possibly an earring) was found during the survey performed by S. Aydingün in 2008 [Aydıngün et al. 2010:277].
Remains:
Interpretation and Dating: EBA pottery of Selimpasa can be dated to the first phase of EBA (Kumtepe I). Selimpasa is one of the mounds which have to be excavated in a near future. It is included in the EBA I settlements crowded on the shore of Marmara-Aegean. Those settlements are; probably; trade-oriented settlements in relation to each other by the sea. Selimpasa is one of the major settlements.
