Location: This site is located 16 km south of the city of Antakya; on the terrace of the district of Pinarbasi; east of the Antakya-Yayladag highway and near the town of Senköy. There appear to be two different areas where the artifacts were concentrated; as shown on the map in Minzoni-Deroche's site report. It is very probable that one of these artifact scatters is the site described by Bostanci. |
Geography and Environment: The mountainous municipality of Senköy is reported to be abundant in rock-shelters and caves and is rich in Palaeolithic chipped stone finds. |
History: |
Research and Excavation: The site was discovered by Enver Yasar Bostanci; who found chipped stone tools around the town of Senköy during his 1967 and 1969 survey of the Hatay Region. Although Bostaci did not provide detailed information on the site or the geographic characteristics of the region; Minzoni-Deroche reports that the terrace in the district of Pinarbasi was formed in an intermediate period between the Mindel and the Riss Ice Ages. This researcher also indicates that chipped stone artifacts collectively published as one site were found in two different artifact scatters; I and II; both north-northeast of the village of Senköy. The names of each of the individual artifact scatters have not been reported. We are also not informed about artifact densities. |

Small Finds: Bostanci reports that he found a flake point he classifies as Levallois as well as an Acheuléen type biface (handaxe). In his second visit to the area (and presumably to the same artifact scatter); Bostanci reports to have found several Acheuléen implements as well as other fragments and flakes; a Lower and Middle Palaeolithic type nosed end scraper; another end scraper made from a thick flake; pyramid-shaped cores and debitage products on the surface [Bostanci 1971: table I-VI; VIII]. Minzoni-Deroche's survey yielded 31 flakes and a fragment of a core from Artifact Scatter I; and 2 blades; 15 flakes and a fragment of a core from Artifact Scatter II. She does not date these tools. |
