It is located in Selcuk District; south-southeast of Izmir Province. First excavations at Ayasuluk Tepesi began in 1921 under the directory of Greek archaeologist Sotiriou at the area around St. Jean Basilica. Between 1927 and 1930 Austrian Institute of Archaeology excavated the interior of the building. In 1960-62 excavation and restorations were conducted by the Directorate of Efes Museum. The project was supported by The Ephesus Foundation founded an American, G.B. Quatmann. During these excavations the north of the basilica and the baptistry at the south of the basilica were unearthed. Gate of Persecution (Takip Kapisi in Turkish) was also restored during this period. After a 12 year interlude, excavations were resumed by the Directorate of Efes Museum in 1974 and were carried out until 2006. Since 2007 M. Büyükkolanci from Pamukkale University has been in charge of the excavations at Ayasuluk Tepesi [http://www.ayasulukkazilari.org/, 11.02.2019; 13:36]. 6 layers were found through a trench on the southeastern part of the Inner Castle. EBA finds of Troy I; Emporio VII; Limantepe and Baklatepe such as three footed storage jars; sherds with incised decorations and cylindirical lids were recovered from the rock rifts and the 6th layer on the bedrock. The presence of materials dating from the Chalcolithic Age was also suggested (Büyükkolanci 1998: 71; 73). The finds expose that the site had been inhabited from the EBA to the Hellenistic Period. This site might be the place described as Ephesus by J. Mellaart. During the excavations carried out in 2005 by Büyükkolancı many EBA pottery pieces and a seal is found from the same period in the East of Trenches 20 T and 20 S [Büyükkolancı 2007: 77].
