The cave is in Sungur Village; which is located north of Yayladag district; south of Hatay city center. The cave is located on the limestone slopes of a hill and its mouth faces south-southeast direction. The cave has two chambers and the entrance of one of these chambers was closed with a wall in later periods. On the foots of the hill that the cave is located in; there is a flat area called Gölyeri Mevkii. It was first visited in 1969 by E. Bostanci but there were no materials encountered except for one single flake found in front of the cave [Bostanci 1971d: 84-99]. In Assar Cave and Gölyeri Mevkii; which were investigated again in 1998 by a team under the leadership of I. Yalçinkaya; materials belonging to the Middle Palaeolithic Period were encountered. Proto-historical pottery and flint flakes were found in the cave. On the platform in front of the cave and on the slopes; chipped stone tools dating to the Middle Palaeolithic Period were encountered. The cores; retouched and unretouched flakes and the nibbled pieces collected from the flat area called Gölyeri; have given the impression that the Clactonien industry and the Middle Palaeolithic type tools were found mixed in this site.
