It lies 450 m east of old-Güloluk Village; recently the Fatih Quarter; next to Yörüklü Village; northwest of Sungurlu; southwest of Çorum Province. It is located 2 km east of the center of the village. It was discovered by T. Sipahi and T. Yildirim in 1997. It can be suggested that it is a slope settlement as the northeastern and northern parts are rocky. Pottery has been scattered around the northwestern and the western parts of the settlement. Sherds dating from the third millennium BC; the MBA and the Phrygian Period were collected from the surface. Sipahi and Yildirim indicate that it is an important settlement because it is near the Yörüklü/ Hüseyindede settlement. Excavation carried on during 2004-06. EBA; Old Hittite and Iron Age layers were observed. During the researches that took place in 2005; it was found that EBA pottery increased on the northern slopes of the mound. The available EBA fragments belong to the end of EBA 3rd phase. It has similarities with potteries found in Alacahöyük end EBA 3rd; and Resuloglu EBA cemetery [Sipahi-Ediz 2007:486]. The reserches continued on the step trench at the western slope in 2006. The trench was expanded to 250 square meters. Two more rooms were found which belong to the Early Hittite A building complex which was unearthed last year. Although it was found that the western parts of the houses were used as kitchens many spindle whorls and loom weights were also found at those sections. The ceramics such as embossment decorated vessels; rhytons and a sealed handle are examples of Hittite types. The soundings performed at the EBA layers revealed pottery similar to the examples found at Resuloglu [Current Archaeology in Turkey; 29.5.2008; 13:24]. In 2007 it was found that the EBA level underneath the Old Hittite culture level was destroyed. It is but highly possible that some wall parts were reused. Inhabitants during the EBA used the rocky area south of Boyali Höyük as settlement. Due to intense erosion inside that section the building remains and sherds were transported along with the landslideÊand mixed within the Hittite level remains. EBA sherds were dated to the end of the level III of this period [Sipahi 2009:181-182]. |
