Location: It is reported to locate next to a modern mosque; south of the train station; near Bozüyük District of Bilecik Province. The site was found by T. Efe by the help of the photographs taken during the excavation. The mound has been almost demolished at present. It is stated that during the construction of the mosque many sherds were found in the foundation pits.
Geography and Environment: The size of the mound is estimated to measure 13 m high; 50 m wide. It is estimated on the basis of a comparison of the human sizes to the background. It is a small settlement.
History:
Research and Excavation: The mound was demolished by a pseudo excavation in 1895-1896 during the construction of the Istanbul-Ankara railway started in 1890 by filling a swamp pit with the soil of the mound. The mound was excavated by A. Koerte; an expert in Classical Philology; with the idea that it could rather be a tumulus. All the finds such as vessels; sherds; stone tools; bones and metal finds were brought to the Istanbul Archaeological Museum.
Stratigraphy: It is a multi-layered settlement.
Small Finds: Pottery: All the finds were thoroughly analyzed by T. Efe. An EBA settlement same as Aharköy was uncovered at Bozüyük; which was not encountered at Demircihöyük. The grit tempered; metallic ware [Efe 1988:pl.61/6]; the gray washed ware/Aharköy ware [Efe 1988:pl.62/16]; the thin washed/mottled ware; the pink ware painted in cream were found. Usual forms are bowls with loop handles attached above the rim; double handled (with groove) dippers; decorated and plain spouted pitchers and footed vessels with human relief unique for this region. It is amazing to find depas at Bozöyük. Ground stone: A stone mold was found with a cavity for metal dagger categorized as type 1a according to Stronach [Körte 1899:pl.4/1].
Remains:
Interpretation and Dating: It is very hard to rate the excavations at Bozöyük in scientific classifications. No attention was paid for either stratification or documentation. The introduction of the excavation material by T. Efe is contributory to the archaeology in this region. The continuity of Demircihöyük EBA culture was evidenced. The settlement is dated to the EBA IIb and IIIa.
