It is likely to have been located at the Harpasos Valley at Haydere; 11 km southeast of the Bozdogan Districr of the Aydın Province. Surveys were conducted by Paton at the early 1900; and by Robert in 1950s related with Bargasa. The information provided by Ptolemy [Ptolemy 5; 2; 15] as well as the coins and inscriptions uncovered in the vicinity localize the ancient city in this region. The surveys carried out in Haydere yielded remains related with gymnasium and other buildings [Bean 1976:143]. The city appears in the Aydin Culture Inventory which was achieved after the surveys organized by the Aydin Province Culture and Tourism Directorship in 2012. The ancient city of Piginda lies on Hisar (Asar) Hill and its skirts which extend in the south-north direction. It is located at a dominating position for Akçay valley. Although the vast majority of the city wall has been demolished, traces can still be seen. It has two city walls. The inner wall surrounds the hill, i.e. Acropolis; while the outer wall passes through the skirt. The city walls are approximately 1 m thick and there is a door opening from south to east. The traces of walls belonging to the rooms can be seen on the hill. To the north, the remains which are thought to belong to a temple were discovered. |
