| The salvage excavations carried out by Yardimci in 1973 in a field; 1 km east of Gölköy; 18 km northwest of the Bodrum District of the Mugla Province exposed remains of a wall; which was reported to have been from "an early period" and also some brick graves. It was found out that the cemetery area is from the Byzantine Period; occupying an earlier settlement. During the excavations; coins from the Hellenistic and Roman Periods were uncovered. However; no finds were unearthed from the graves. Thus; it is believed that they might have belonged to poor people [Yardimci 1986:349-351]. The survey conducted by Bean and Cook in 1950s at the inner parts of the Gulf Göl yielded a honorary inscription from the Hellenistic Period; which is suggested to have been dated no later than 200 B.C. [Bean-Cook 1955:131; 140]. There are vessel type graves, urn tombs, graves with a single room, and graves with front room and 1 and/or 2 rooms in various size and plans. The rooms are generally in rectangular or square plan. Some of the graves have niches or slots for a slab above their entrances. Some of the graves, on the other hand, have neither niches nor klines. A burial chamber carved in the shape of a semi-circle was also observed. The grave consisting of a front room and a burial chamber has a round chamber and there are niches on both sides of the entrance of the chamber. The ceiling of the rock-cut grave, the entrance of which was carved in the form of a frame, is covered with a curb roof. One of the urn tombs has a triangular pediment and the slots for lid are visible. Rock-cut vessels in various sizes were determined near the grave consisting of 2 chambers and a front room. The grave, the front section of which was partially closed by a wall erected in the later periods, have a front room and a chamber. There are low benches to the north and west wall of the front room, the entrance is to the south and there is a slot for a slab above it. There is a rock-cut vessel on the south wall of the chamber. Another grave is in rectangular plan and consists of 2 rooms. The first room contains burial vessels. To the southwest corner of this room is a burial chamber. There are graves that are being used as a storage or barn. It is registered in the Cultural Inventory of Mugla Province [Mugla KE III.2 2013: 1208-20, 1222-29]. |
