Location: The site lies southwest of the city of Çorum; in the borders of Bogazköy southeast of Sungurlu; 600 m east of the village. |
Geography and Environment: There are wavy plains and high elevations between them at the area where Bogazköy ruins are located. Büyükkaya is one of these elevations. |
History: |
Research and Excavation: A small excavation was conducted by R. Hachmann to recover the Late Hittite and Hittite Period remains on this elevation in 1952 and 1954. Further excavations were conducted by J. Seeher in the frame of Bogazköy excavations in 1995. |
Stratigraphy: Prehistoric pieces were also found among the historic sherds; obsidian and bone finds. It is reported that these finds were not collected stratigraphically; and were probably recovered from a deposit; disposed within the Hittite Period material. |
Small Finds: Pottery: Sherds of Büyükkaya were studied by Parzinger in details [ Parzinger 1993:211-229]. Sand-tempered gray slipped ware was published as "Büyükkaya ware". In addition; sherds of brown-faced black slipped ware were found. There are vessels with inverted rims and everted rims; and carinated vessels. A small amount of incised decorated sherds were recovered. |
Remains: |
Interpretation and Dating: The existence of the deposit; consisting of Chalcolithic Age sherds; can not be explained. Büyükkaya might be used by the hunters from time to time; because there are similar finds around Yazilikaya and Bogazköy. A small settlement such as Büyükkaya could have been destroyed by a Hittite settlement. According to Parzinger; Büyükkaya material is contemporary with Alisar 19-15 M; Karanovo IV; Yazilikaya D 1 [Parzinger 1993: fig.9]. Abundant Chalcolithic Age sherds in the Early Hittite Period material is reported by Seeher [Seeher 1997:326]. |
