| It is situated at Selef; approximately 2 km northeast of the Bayat Village between Kuleönü and Atabey of the Atabey District of the Isparta Province. It was founded by Seleucus I (312-280 B.C.) or Antiochus I (280-261 B.C.). And it was renamed as Claudioseleuceia during the 1st century A.D. The divinity Men is depicted with a horse on the coinage. According to M. Waelkens; the borders of the city covered the plian ground to the east of Kuleönü and south of Atabey; the eastern extension of the plain ground of Isparta and the western section of the Davras Mountains; and had no borderline with Sagalassos to the south. In 1993, Isparta Museum excavated at the site for a season. In 2017, Isparta Museum launched excavations at Seleukeia Sidera again. Surveys were conducted in 1994-95 under the direction of M. Waelkens on behalf of the Leuven Catholic University. Excavations have been still carried out by Isparta Museum. The remains of the ancient city can be listed as southern terrace; eastern gate of acropolis; gate of the eastern slope; a stairs-tunnel-well system; building with a podium; theatre and necropolis and many inscribed inscriptions. It takes place in the registered archaeological sites list prepared by Ministry of Culture and Tourism. |
