Location: This site lies southwest of the city of Burdur; northeast of the town of Yesilova; approximately 4.3 km northeast of the village of Karaatli in the district of Düden. It lies immediately south of the road which runs between Karaatli and Burdur and lies north of the village of Yarisli [Özsait 1991b:table XIX/9].
Geography and Environment: Çatalöz Stream flows 300 m north of the site; which lies on a small plain between the Salda and Yarasli Lakes. This stream probably flowed closer to the mound. There was a swamp known as the Karagöz Swamp south of the mound when the site was surveyed. It has been reported that the mound is very low; almost the same level as the plain it lies on; and that it is used for agriculture. It is; therefore; difficult to locate. The dimensions of the mound have not been given. The name Düden was given by Özsait.
History:
Research and Excavation: The site was discovered by M. Özsait in 1982.
Stratigraphy: In addition to Late Neolithic-Early Chalcolithic finds; several Chalcolithic sherds resembling Hacilar wares were found.
Small Finds: Pottery: The ceramic finds include red slip painted pottery; well burnished and well-fired ware and vessels with vertical; tubular; pierced handles and oval vessels. Clay Finds: A figurine resembling the idols from the Late Neolithic levels at Hacilar was found on the surface of the mound. The figurine is of a woman with large almond-shaped eyes; hands on her breasts; and long hair. Without the broken bottom half; the figurine is 8.5 cm in size [Özsait 1986a:fig.I/1]. Chipped Stone: Both flint and obsidian tools were found.
Remains:
Interpretation and Dating: The ceramics and other finds from Düden Höyük have Hacilar IV affinities. It is thought that the site is important in studying the transition of hunter gatherer peoples of the Göller Bölgesi (Lakes Region) to food-production. The site must therefore have an Aceramic Neolithic component as well. The Late Neolithic finds from Düden Höyük resemble those from Incirdere; Höyücek; Karamusa; Keçili (Helvaciköy); Seydiler;Ilyas; Karaaliler and Çigirtlankaya.
