It lies approximately 4 km northwest of the Sarilar Town of Avanos, northeast of the provincial center of Nevsehir. 400 m to the east of the mound runs the Sarilar-Toprakli motorway, and 11 km to the north passes the Kirsehir-Kayseri motorway. It has a diameter of 300 m, and a height of 29-30 m along with the underlying natural elevation on a flat plain. It is likely to cover an area of ca. 20 acres. It was first introduced by D.H. French, investigated by a team under the direction of H. Sever, and sherds that were dated mainly to the Assyrian Colonial Period, 2nd Millennium BC, Iron (Phrygian) and Hellenistic Periods were collected. The excavations conducted by the same team during 1991-92 and 1996 seasons yielded EBA, Iron Age (Phrygian) and Hellenistic Period sherds in the trench (grid square J14) on the eastern skirt. It was found that the building level 3 in the southern terrace trench (grid squares J15-J16) belonged to the Iron Age (Phrygian). Although this building level has been severely damaged under the Hellenistic and Roman Period building levels, it was found out that it has three phases. The grid-square J16 yielded a partially preserved room made of mudbrick wall and a stone paved floor belonging to the building level IIIb; the grid squares J15 and J16 revealed a wall fragment, presumably belonging to the building level IIIc a tandoor to the west of this wall; the grid-square J15 yielded a garbage dump site, doubtfully dating to the Iron Age. In addition, the excavations in these grid squares revealed Iron Age (Phrygian) Hellenistic and Roman Period sherds as well as fragment of a handle with a seal impression from the Iron Age, jugs in different sizes [Sever 1993: pic.93; Sever 1994: pics. 2-7], two cylindrical seals and a stamp made of steatite [Sever 1993: pics.8-11], a bronze arrowhead and terracotta spindl whorls. The mound was also surveyed under the direction of S. Omura. Omura also mentioned sherds dating to the EBA, MBA, LBA, Iron Age and Classic Period. It is listed among the registered archaeological sites by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
