Location: Located 8 km northwest of the Saray District; it lies on the northern skirt of the Yanosman Hill on the bank of the Ayvacik (Ergene) Creek. It can be reached from the Kavacik Village; which is off the road at 5th km of the Saray-Vize road; or from the Saray-Ayvacik road. The road connecting the Kavacik and Ayvacik villages and crossing over the Ayvacik Creek passes by the cave. It lies next to the Horatas Cave. |
Geography and Environment: The vicinity of the Kücük Kalasli Cave consists of Paleozoic gneisses; basis of the Istranca Massif; overlaid by the Eocene aged Kirklareli limestones; Oligocene arenaceous-argillaceous-chalky limestones and Plio-Quarternary sand and pebble deposits. Being a passage type of fossil cave which halted its development; it is a very characteristic form of the Pliocene Age. It was developed in the east-west direction in accordance with the formation of the Paleo creek of Ayvacik; meandering over the Pliocene denudational surface. It came to surface after breaking down by the morphological rejuvenescence resulting from the Quaternary movements. It has two entrances; the second one being occluded by blocks and debris. |
