Location: It lies about 750 m southeast of Can Hasan III; 12 km northwest of the province of Karaman.
Geography and Environment: The mounds Can Hasan I and III; which are at a close distance to the foothills of the Taurus and take place in a fertile plain; are prehistoric settlements. Can Hasan II is dated to the later periods [French 1962b:27]. Mound no I of can Hasan; which is known as Canasun in Kiepert and later as Canason; measures 360x280x5 m [French 1962a:36].
History:
Research and Excavation: Can Hasan is reported in the publications by K. Kökten. It was visited by J. Mellaart; A. Hall; and D. French during the Konya Plain Survey in 1951-52 and 1958. In 1962-67; an excavation was conducted by D. French for the British Archaeology Institute [French 1962b:27]. It takes place in the registered archaeological sites list prepared by Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Stratigraphy: The site is composed of 8 strata. The uppermost stratum is Late Chalcolithic and Stratum 2A beneath dates to the Middle Chalcolithic Period and consists of five sub-layers. Beneath this; Stratum 2B is comprised of three sub-layers and dates to the Early Chalcolithic Period. Stratum 3 is the earliest of the Chalcolithic Strata; and Strata 4-7 are all Neolithic [French 1964a:21; 1965a:27; 1968a:71].
Small Finds: Architecture: The Late Neolithic houses which were exposed in a small area have signs of renewals. There are also indications that wooden beams were used in these rectangular mudbrick houses. Several small cells with a variety of plant seeds were also found within a building structure in Stratum 5. Ceramics: The ware of Strata 4-7 is well burnished and brown; black and red in color. Stylistically these strata include closed vessels and flaring lipped forms [French 1968a:71; 1968b:91]. Clay Finds: Clay is used for making small finds and figurines [French 1968b:91]. Chipped Stone: The chipped stone tools found are obsidian [French 1968b:91]. Ground Stone: Stratum 5 yielded grinding stones; pestles as well as two blue beads while a limestone bowl was found in Stratum 6 [French 1968a:71; 1968b:91]. Antler/ Bone: Awls and points made from antler or bone are quite common [French 1968b:91]. Human Remains: A baby skeleton was found in Stratum 5 [French 1968b:91]. Fauna: Two canine skeletons as well as the head and horns of a goat were found [French 1968b:91]. Flora: Excavations yielded many carbonized plant seeds [French 1968b:91].
Remains:
Interpretation and Dating: No C-14 samples were taken from the Late Neolithic Layers. The pottery shows some affinity with layers XXVII-XXIV of Mersin Yumuktepe and the surface finds from Çatalhöyük [Yakar 1991:197].
